To make its platform more welcoming and attractive, YouTube has taken inspiration from TIKTOK and added a new option.
After Instagram Reels, YouTube has just announced the launch of a new feature called Shorts. This is a “new experience of short videos for designers and artists who want to create eye-catching videos using nothing more than their cell phones,” explains the platform on its blog.
Like on TIKTOK, the videos are up to 15 seconds long, where you can put together several videos, adding creative effects with the possibility of speeding them up or slowing them down and putting in music as well. And to switch from one video to another, all it takes is a simple swipe of your finger.
This novelty is available first in India in Beta version and will then be released “in other countries in the coming months”.
The choice of India by YouTube is not a pure coincidence, the Chinese giant TIKTOK is banned there. The Indian government has stated that this application is “detrimental to India’s sovereignty and integrity, defence of India, state security and public order”. YouTube is leading the battle there without a competitor.
“This is an early version of the product, but we’re launching it now to take you – our global community of users, creators, and artists – on our journey with us as we build and improve Shorts,” says Jaffe. We’ll continue to add new features and expand to other countries in the coming months as we learn from you and listen to your feedback,” he continued.
